Astounding Astragalus in Humboldt County and Beyond

Astragalus (the milkvetches) is a large and particularly diverse genus within the western United States, with a large number of rare and endemic taxa. In this talk, Professor Kerry Byrne (Environmental Science and Management, Humboldt State University) will provide an overview of the genus Astragalus in California and beyond, highlight some of the interesting species found in Humboldt County, and describe some of the ongoing conservation research she is involve in with a federally endangered Astragalus species in southern Oregon.

Blue Collar Botany

Joey Santore is an artist, railroader, and botanist who has traveled extensively documenting and photographing the flora and plant communities of western North America. He began his journey into botany ten years ago by studying conifers and is currently fascinated with the sunflower family, Asteraceae. Joey will take us to unique botanical destinations in both the United States and Mexico and share his diverse passions for native plants, the mysteries of plant distributions, the genus Hesperocyparis, desert flora, evolutionary radiations, and street tacos.
