CNPS Native Fall Plant Sale, September 23rd

The North Coast Chapter of the California Native Plant Society (CNPS) will hold its annual fall plant sale on Saturday, September 23rd from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at our nursery site, located at the Kokte Ranch, Jacoby Creek Land Trust, 2181 Old Arcata Road, Bayside. A CNPS member’s only pre-sale will occur from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., prior to us opening to the public.

At the sale, we offer a wide variety of plants: perennials, shrubs, ferns, bulbs, grasses, groundcovers and sedums for our local gardeners to plant in their yards. Our plants compliment a variety of habitat types found here on the north coast, including sun, shade, part sun/shade and wet/moist. Come and find a wide assortment of plants for your garden such as; red columbine, California fuchsia & penstemons which provide nectar for hummingbirds; salvias, yarrow, and buckwheats for our butterflies and bees; strawberries and yerba buena for groundcovers; grasses to add year round interest and form to your landscape; and for those darker places in your garden, shade plants to provide flower and foliage color.

At the fall plant sale, we will have additional types of salvias, buckwheats, penstemons, mimulus and grasses that we did not have available at the spring sale. Other plants of special interest, which will be for sale, include Scarlet gilia (Ipomopsis aggregata), Indian Pink (Silene californica) and California Pitcher plant (Darlingtonia californica).

In addition to the plants that our local CNPS propagates, 3 local native plant nurseries and plant growers (Samara Restoration, Lost Foods, and Beresford’s Bulbs) will be there to add to the number of plant species available for purchase. As we get closer to the plant sale, an updated inventory list of the plants that will be for sale will be made available.

Experienced gardeners will be on hand to answer questions and help you make the best plant selections for your particular garden space and habitat type.

Please bring your own box to transport plants home in.

We except cash, personal checks and credit cards at our fall plant sale.

Remember that fall is the best time to plant! By doing so, your new plants have the fall and winter rains to water them and the time to put in new roots before their spring growth starts.

A plant list for the Spring 2017 sale is here. (You will need Adobe Reader.) A list of the plants that will be available for the fall sale will be up closer to the date of the sale as the nursery workers are still busy growing plants.

CNPS thanks Mad River Gardens Nursery in helping us to keep our costs down by enabling us to purchase pallets of potting soil, pots and flats at reduced cost. Support them, because they support us.

CNPS Nursery

The CNPS nursery is on the property of the Jacoby Creek Land Trust's Kokte Ranch, 2182 Old Arcata Rd. Jacoby Creek Land Trust is on Old Arcata Rd between Jacoby Creek Rd and Graham Rd., at a sign by a blue house, opposite a mail box on a 15-ft-tall pole. The sign says "Kokte Ranch. Jacoby Creek Land Trust. Humboldt Wildlife Care Center.." The driveway is gravel.

From Arcata follow Old Arcata Rd south (toward Eureka) from Sunny Brae, past Jacoby Creek Rd, watching on the left for a grey house. Turn left in there.

From Eureka get on Old Arcata Rd from Myrtle Ave or from Bayside Cutoff. Go north (toward Arcata) past Graham Rd on the right. Turn right in the gravel driveway by the sign and grey house.

The nursery is located behind the barn and the brown building, in front of the Wildlife Care Center.

" PLANT PROPOGATION PROGRAM AND NURSERY NEEDS VOLUNTEERS" help propagate and grow native plants for our chapter's plant sales.

The nursery volunteers work every Wednesday from 10 - 1 at the nursery site, other days as needed. On our workdays at the nursery we work on starting new plants from seeds or cuttings, transplant seedlings into larger containers, wash and sterilize all containers that we put the plant starts in, clean up the nursery site, trim and weed the plants, water and feed plants, as well as other activities to get ready for the upcoming sales.

The Chapter is always working on increasing the number of species of plants that we grow for our plant sales. Volunteers are needed to collect seed in the wild for the nursery crew to propagate and grow. If you can provide collected seed, please clean it, indicate where and when you collected it and either drop it off at the nursery location at our during our work time, or contact Chris as below.

We have also been doing dig and divides from community members established landscapes and potting up seedlings or divisions from those landscapes that we obtain for later sales. If you have a landscape that can provide such plants, contact Chris.

If you have time to volunteer to help start seeds, to transplant seedlings or help wash & sterlize 4" or 1-gallon pots, you can contribute to our chapter's biggest fund-raisers. To help out contact Chris Beresford, Nursery Manager, at 707 826-0259 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Please note: Please do not drop off containers at the nursery. We continue to get sizes that we do not use and we then have to dispose of them, thanks!

Chapter Plant Sales

The Chapter has plant sales twice a year, one the first weekend in May held in conjunction with the Spring Wildflower Show at the Jefferson Community Center, 1000 B Street, Eureka and the other in September on the Saturday after the North Country Fair at our nursery location. We offer a CNPS member only pre-sale at our fall sale.

At our sales you can get your native shrubs, trees, perennials, bulbs, grasses and ferns - suitable for a wide variety of natural and human habitats. Buy only one plant or fill up your pickup.

Experienced growers, gardeners and botanists will be on hand to assist you in choosing plants to meet your gardening/landscaping needs and to help answer your questions. We have reference books available for use and educational materials on hand to further assist gardeners who want to incorporate native plants into their landscapes.

Bring the beauty of Humboldt's forests, meadows and dunes to your garden as well as other California native species! All proceeds benefit the North Coast Chapter and it's activities.
