Evening Program. Restoring Mountain Meadows to Improve Forest Wildfire and Climate Resilience

March 13, 2025 by Paul Wilson

    Wednesday, April 9, 7:30–9:00 p.m.

Riparian meadows occur in low-gradient floodplains. Over 150 years of human-caused degradation has resulted in lowered groundwater—diminishing the value of meadows for water storage, baseflow, sediment capture, wildfire resistance, wildlife habitat, and carbon storage. Karen Pope (U.S. Forest Service) will tell us about a machine-learning model that identifies “lost meadows”. They inferred that there was likely about three times more meadow area in the Sierra Nevada than currently exists. Attend at Six Rivers Masonic Lodge, 251 Bayside Rd., Arcata, refreshments at 7:00, program at 7:30 p.m., or join by Zoom.
