Our out-of-town guest speaker is Brent Mishler. He is on the statewide board of directors of CNPS and is retired from being Distinguished Professor of Integrative Biology and Director of the Herbaria at UC Berkeley. He will be speaking about plants that have narrow geographic ranges (endemics) and how this relates to whether they are deeply or shallowly rooted in the tree of life. Certain centers of endemism have a concentration of plants that are deeply rooted, so we might say they are museums of evolution, and others have a concentration of plants that are shallowly rooted, cradles of evolution.
