Look at those Leaves! – Wildflower Show ArtShareApril

Join the Wildflower Art Trail fun!

Try this creative way to learn the Wildflowers:

đŸŒ±Leaves are the solar panels of a Plant and a perfect start to ID’ing our green Friends.

First, find a plant you’d like to get to know.

1. Look up close and describe the Leaf Shape: round, oval, lance, palmate (shaped like your palm). Quickly sketch the outline.

2. How about the leaf edges? Smooth? Serrated/jagged? Rounded or printed serrated points? Add edge features to to your leaf sketch — they are there for a reason!

3. Find the leaf’s veins (I warned you’d have to get up close!). Do they radiate from a single point? Begin directly or alternately opposite each other? Add the veins to your sketch. Main vein patterns are important, you can skip the smaller veins this time.

4. How does the leaf connect to the leaf stem? From the center of the leaf? From an dip? Add the stem to your sketch.

5. Now here’s a fun trick. Open iNaturalist App on your phone. Select ‘Observe’, then ‘Camera’ and screenshot your sketch. iNaturalist will tell you the name of your plant! Or, at least make suggestions. Read the description of the plant suggested, does it match your plant? Did iNaturalist get it right from your sketch? Either way, you’ve learned what features are used to describe a plant & can watch for them in any plant.

6. Time to go Wild with your Leaf studies! How do you want to show off what you learned? Paint the leaf shapes? Collage multiples? Crochet a few? Combine different transparent shapes? Have fun, keep some, take some small arts to Little Free Wildflower Art Galleries located throughout the community during California Native Plant Society, North Coast Chapter’s Wildflower Show ArtShare April.

Bring your Wildflower Art to the Wildflower Show, May 1-3 and trade your Wildflower Art in the Little Free Wildflower Galleries throughout the month of ArtShare April. See Little Gallery locations & about the May 3 Art Swap at the California Native Plant Society, North Coast Chapter website.
